A management consultant based in San Francisco, Vishal Grover previously served as president and CEO of a global business solutions provider. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Vishal Grover is involved in charitable activities. He is an active supporter of WildAid. WildAid is an organization that seeks to eradicate the illicit wildlife trade by reducing the consumption of wildlife products. Its efforts include consumer persuasion and support for better enforcement. One of WildAid’s initiatives involves saving sharks. Around 73 million sharks are killed every year for shark fin soup. Moreover, a number of shark populations have shrunk by up to 98 percent over a 15-year period. The shark fin campaign to reduce China’s and Southeast Asia’s shark fin consumption began in 2006. Surveys have revealed that 75 percent of the Chinese population did not know that sharks were the source of the soup. The organization’s efforts include “Say No to Shark Fin” messages on TV and additional media platforms, and PSAs with Yao Ming, David Beckham, Maggie Q., and others. Moreover, through its campaigns, it has sought public and political support for legal restrictions. The results of its efforts include improved public awareness, the banning of shark fin soup by 15 hotel chains and over 30 airlines, the banning of the shark fin trade by Massachusetts, and a Malaysian ban on serving shark fin soup at government banquets.
